Gelfman
makes abstract paintings that are rooted in the visible world. She identifies
and isolates textures, forms or patterns, either natural or manmade, then
repeats them to create compositions that seem as if they could flow forever in
all directions. The works in this exhibition refer to landscape, but do not
represent it. Instead, they suggest a sense of place. In the most recent series,
the dune paintings, the
surface image changes with the slightest shift in the viewer's position or in
the angle of light.
The second phase of P.S.–P.P.S. presents
Genovese’s response to the participatory component of his process. The
information inscribed by the public on the previously displayed enameled plates,
was transcribed, archived and translated where Genovese through this
internalizing of social commentary and rhetoric discovers content for new work.
In this series, he has abstracted and engraved the information to the point of
illegibility onto 5 mirror polished fractured plates. Two vitrines display works
on paper that through redaction reveal only partial segments of the transcribed
text. Aside from the conceptual ideas behind the work, on a visual level
Genovese is speaking to materiality and reflection of light and movement.
